What this is

Scales, modes and chord tones shown on the guitar fretboard and on a keyboard, plus a practice player and a metronome. All three run entirely in your browser.

The fretboard tool covers 13 scales and 36 chord types in all twelve keys. Not just six-string standard tuning — seven and eight strings, down-tunings, drop tunings and open tunings, 51 in all, and you can enter a tuning that is not listed. Bass, ukulele, mandolin and banjo work the same way.

Where it came from

It started as an Android app called ChordBreaker and a Windows app called Loopshred. The fretboard came from the former, the practice player and metronome from the latter.

Both were finished and usable, and nobody found them. Search a store for “C dorian fretboard” and neither one comes up. On the web every view has an address — it can be linked, bookmarked, and found by searching.

Porting them also lifted a limit in the originals. They stored fretboard layouts ahead of time, one per scale, which locked them to six-string standard tuning. The layout is now computed from the open-string pitches each time, so string count and tuning are unconstrained.

The tools

Fretboard — scales, modes and chord tones on the fretboard and keyboard at once. Read them as degrees (1, b3, #11 …) or as note names, with adjustable capo and fret count.

Player — slow a track down without changing its pitch, or shift the key on its own. Loop the hard bars with A-B. Files you open are processed in the browser and never uploaded.

Metronome — tap tempo, beat display, click and rock beat. Change the beat count and the snare follows.
